How was life without social media? / ¿Cómo era la vida sin social media?

Apparently, Generation Z wants to be heard. Over the past few weeks, we have been witnessing a kind of revolution led by young people who have had enough of politicians. Personally, I find it wonderful that the youth are protesting against injustice. However, today I’m not here to talk about politics. What really surprises me is how these demonstrations are organised: everything comes down to social media. In fact, young people are so immersed in it that it’s hard for them to imagine a world without it. But, you know, we used to survive without WhatsApp, without Instagram, and without TikTok. How?

To begin with, not only did our parents use to have newspapers at home, but it was also a habit to watch the news on TV after lunch. That’s how we learnt about what was going on in the world. I imagine this may sound boring now, but twenty years ago we were perfectly capable of watching thirty minutes of news in a row, unlike today’s thirty-second TikTok reels.

Furthermore, whenever we wanted to contact our friends, we had to call their home phones and ask to speak with them. Needless to say, meeting up with friends was more challenging since we had no choice but to make a chain of calls to arrange a time and place, which, somehow, always worked out in the end.

In addition, at school we didn’t have online platforms. We studied with books and took notes in our notebooks. Not to mention the fact that we didn’t have Mr. Google or ChatGPT to do our homework, so we had to use old encyclopedias or what was called Encarta.

All in all, what I’m trying to say is that, even though it seems impossible to live without social media, it’s not. Many of us used to get informed, study, and socialise without it, and to be honest, a world without social media was far more enriching, or at least simpler. Don’t you sometimes feel as if we were trapped by the internet?

Aparentemente, la Generación Z quiere hacerse escuchar. En las últimas semanas hemos sido testigos de una especie de revolución liderada por jóvenes que están hartos de los políticos. Personalmente, me parece maravilloso que la juventud proteste contra la injusticia. Sin embargo, hoy no vengo a hablar de política. Lo que realmente me sorprende es cómo se organizan estas manifestaciones: todo gira en torno a las redes sociales. De hecho, los jóvenes están tan inmersos en ellas que les cuesta imaginar un mundo sin ellas. Pero, como sabéis, nosotros antes sobrevivíamos sin WhatsApp, sin Instagram y sin TikTok. ¿Cómo?

Para empezar, nuestros padres solían tener periódicos en casa, y era rutinario ver las noticias en la tele después de comer. Así era como nos enterábamos de lo que pasaba en el mundo. Imagino que ahora esto puede parecer aburrido, pero hace veinte años éramos perfectamente capaces de ver treinta minutos seguidos de noticias, a diferencia de los treinta segundos que dura cada reel de TikTok.

Además, cada vez que queríamos ponernos en contacto con nuestros amigos, teníamos que llamar al teléfono fijo de su casa y preguntar por la persona en cuestión. Ni que decir tiene que quedar con la cuadrilla era más complicado, ya que no nos quedaba otra que hacer una cadena de llamadas para fijar la hora y el lugar, lo cual, de algún modo, siempre acababa saliendo bien.

Por otra parte, en el colegio no teníamos plataformas online. Estudiábamos con libros y tomábamos apuntes en nuestros cuadernos. Y, por supuesto, no teníamos al señor Google ni a ChatGPT para hacer la tarea, así que había que recurrir a las viejas enciclopedias o a lo que se llamaba Encarta.

En definitiva, lo que quiero decir es que, aunque ahora parezca imposible vivir sin redes sociales, no lo es. Muchos de nosotros solíamos informarnos, estudiar y socializar sin ellas y, siendo sincera, un mundo sin redes sociales era mucho más enriquecedor, o al menos más sencillo. ¿No sentís a veces como si estuviéramos atrapados por Internet?
