Cambridge 12 years later/ Cambridge 12 años más tarde

I spent last Saturday in Cambridge. The weather was amazing, and I managed to see some of my old friends, which was fantastic. However, on top of that, that day was doubly special since exactly twelve years ago was when I first arrived in the UK, to live precisely in Cambridge. Actually, I remember that on the 18th of September of 2011, the weather was pretty nice as well. Do you think that this town has changed a lot since then?

To begin with, even though the town itself hasn't changed much, it is true that the area close to the train station has undergone a tremendous transformation. As a matter of fact, it is quite noticeable that the whole area is utterly modern and new, with restaurants, coffee shops, offices, and hotels built around the station. In addition, there is a large bicycle parking area since Cambridge, like Amsterdam, is a place where everybody moves around by bicycle.

Apart from that, the essence of the town remains the same, although there are new restaurants, and the nightlife has apparently changed a little bit. For example, years ago, we used to go clubbing at the Wetherspoon called The Regal, where everyone in town would meet. However, it seems that nowadays, after the pandemic, they don't play music anymore.

Regarding my old friends, well, since we all get older, it's obvious that we don't have the same lifestyle as before, and we don't go out as much as we used to. Nevertheless, the old stories will remain with us forever, and we will laugh at them while remembering anecdotes. It's always nice to see them as if it was still 2015. Next time I come back, let's see how the town has improved.

El sábado pasado estuve en Cambridge. Hizo muy bueno y logré ver a algunos de mis viejos amigos, lo cual fue genial. Sin embargo, además de eso, ese día fue doblemente especial, ya que exactamente hace doce años fue cuando llegué por primera vez al Reino Unido para vivir, precisamente a Cambridge. De hecho, recuerdo que el 18 de septiembre de 2011 también hizo muy buen tiempo. ¿Crees que esta ciudad ha cambiado mucho desde entonces?

Para empezar, aunque en sí misma no ha cambiado mucho, es cierto que el área cerca de la estación de tren ha experimentado una tremenda transformación. De hecho, es bastante evidente que toda la zona es completamente moderna y nueva, con restaurantes, cafeterías, oficinas y hoteles construidos alrededor.  Además, hay un gran aparcamiento para bicicletas, ya que Cambridge, al igual que Ámsterdam, es un lugar donde todo el mundo se mueve en bicicleta.

Aparte de eso, la esencia de la ciudad sigue siendo la misma, aunque hay nuevos restaurantes y la vida nocturna aparentemente ha cambiado un poco. Por ejemplo, hace años solíamos salir de fiesta al Wetherspoon llamado The Regal, donde toda la ciudad se juntaba. En cambio, parece que hoy en día, después de la pandemia, ya no ponen música.

En cuanto a mis amigos, bueno, dado que todos nos estamos haciendo mayores, es obvio que no tenemos el mismo estilo de vida que antes y no salimos tanto como solíamos hacerlo. Sin embargo, las viejas historias permanecerán con nosotros para siempre y nos reiremos de ellas recordando anécdotas. Siempre es agradable verlos como si todavía fuera 2015. La próxima vez que vuelva, veamos cómo ha mejorado la ciudad.
