A world without smartphones/ Un mundo sin móviles

When did you get your first mobile phone? Some of you may not know a world without smartphones, but for many of us, the only way we had to meet our friends was through the old landline phones we used to have at home. Indeed, back then, we didn't have any other option but to arrive on time, and of course, the possibility of sending an SMS only became a reality twenty years ago. Nowadays, it seems impossible to survive our daily routine without mobile internet, but do you remember how we used to communicate, let's say, in 2005?

To begin with, when I was a teenager, we didn't have mobile phones, not even the early Nokias or Alcatels. So, it was normal for young people to create a kind of telephone chain. One person would call a friend to agree on the time and place to meet, and then that friend would call another, and so on. To be honest, I don't recall when I got my first mobile phone, but I do remember that I shared my very first one with one of my brothers.

Then, years later (certainly not at the age of 12), I finally had my own mobile phone, which included the classic game of Snake, and the inability to access the internet, which was still just a dream at the time. So, essentially, we used to send text messages to each other, and occasionally, Movistar would offer us unlimited SMS for three euros during the weekend, which seemed like a great deal.

Additionally, we would use MSN Messenger to chat with our friends after school on our computers, and we would meet up at 6 PM to use the internet at one of our houses, since using it before that time was quite expensive. All of this is ancient history now, but it might be nice to detach ourselves from so much internet exposure. Twenty years ago, life was both more challenging and simpler at the same time. ¿Cuándo tuviste tu primer teléfono móvil? Algunos quizás no conocéis un mundo sin smartphones, pero para muchos de nosotros, la única forma que teníamos de quedar con nuestros amigos era a través de los antiguos teléfonos fijos que solíamos tener en casa. De hecho, en aquel entonces, no teníamos otra opción que llegar puntuales, y, por supuesto, la posibilidad de enviar un SMS solo se hizo realidad hace veinte años. Hoy en día, parece imposible sobrevivir a nuestra rutina diaria sin internet móvil, pero ¿recordáis cómo solíamos comunicarnos, digamos, en 2005?

Para empezar, cuando era adolescente, no teníamos teléfonos móviles, ni siquiera los primeros Nokias o Alcatels. Así que era normal que creáramos una especie de cadena telefónica. Una persona llamaba a un amigo para acordar la hora y el lugar de quedada, y luego ese amigo llamaba a otro, y así sucesivamente. Para ser sinceros, no recuerdo cuándo tuve mi primer móvil, pero sí recuerdo que lo compartía con uno de mis hermanos.

Luego, años después (desde luego que no a los 12 años), finalmente tuve mi propio teléfono móvil, que incluía el clásico juego de Snake y la imposibilidad de acceder a internet, que aún era algo impensable. En esos momentos, básicamente, solíamos enviarnos mensajes de texto entre nosotros, y de vez en cuando, Movistar nos ofrecía mensajes de texto ilimitados por tres euros durante el fin de semana, lo cual era una maravilla. 

Además, solíamos usar MSN Messenger para chatear con nuestros amigos después del colegio en nuestros ordenadores, y quedábamos a las 6 PM para usar internet en una de nuestras casas, ya que usarlo antes de esa hora era bastante caro. Todo esto es historia antigua, pero podría ser buena idea desconectarnos un poco de tanta exposición a internet. Hace veinte años, la vida era más desafiante y, al mismo tiempo, más sencilla. ¿Eres capaz de no usar tu teléfono móvil durante un día?
