English in the A-Levels/ Inglés en la selectividad

Do you remember the English exam that we had to take on the A-levels in order to be accepted in the university? Do you recall having a part of listening or speaking in that exam? If you are in your thirties it would be impossible since at that time (nor currently) that test didn´t include those parts. But, why not? Don´t you think these skills are precisely essential so as to assess the English level of a student?

For starters, the level required to pass the English A level exam in Spain is a B1, thus, an intermediate level, which is quite low taking into account that nowadays many degrees include subjects in English. In addition, in my opinion I must say that apart from being capable of reading and writing, it is crucial to be able to understand the gist of what someone is saying to you, don´t you reckon? At the end of the day, students will have to attend English classes, and more importantly, deal with life itself, and in order to be capable of going shopping, going to the bank or do any paperwork, you have to comprehend what are you being told.

Moreover, so as to complete all these aforementioned tasks, not only must you have a decent listening but also you ought to be able to speak and being understood. In light of this view, we can agree with the fact that speaking and listening are the most required skills should you want to maintain basic conversations with others. Thus, I fail to understand why these skills are not a must in the university.

To make things worse, the A-levels for people over 25 years old don´t even test your writing, thus we are creating students that read pretty well but that don´t know how to write, nor speak, let alone understand. Is that right? I don´t think so.

¿Te acuerdas si tu examen de inglés de selectividad incluía algún test de expresión o comprensión oral? Si estás en la treintena lo dudo porque en aquel entonces no había ni speaking ni listening, ni tampoco lo hay ahora. Pero, ¿por qué no?, ¿no crees que estas destrezas son esenciales para evaluar el nivel de inglés de un estudiante?

Para empezar, el nivel requerido para aprobar la selectividad es un B1, es decir, nivel intermedio, lo cual es bastante bajo si tenemos en cuenta que hoy en día cada vez más carreras incluyen asignaturas en inglés. Además, en mi opinión, aparte de ser capaz de leer y escribir, es crucial ser capaz de entender qué te están diciendo, ¿no crees? Al fin y al cabo, los alumnos tienen clases en inglés, y encima, para hacer compra, ir al banco o realizar otros recados debes entender al otro.

Por otro lado, para completar las mencionadas tareas, no solamente debes tener oído decente, sino también poder hablar y hacerte entender. Con todo, yo creo que estamos de acuerdo en que de hecho el speaking y el listening son las fortalezas más requeridas para mantener conversaciones básicas. Entonces, no entiendo por qué no son exigidas en la universidad.

Para empeorar las cosas, el examen de ingles de seletividad para mayores de 25 ni siquiera incluye un ejercicio de expresión escrita, con lo cual estamos creando generaciones que leen muy bien pero que no saben cómo escribir ni hablar, y menos aún entender. ¿Estamos haciéndolo bien? No creo .
