Poor Journalism? / ¿Pobre Periodismo?

More often than not people tend to criticise the current role of journalists, stating that not only do we publish biased stories out of interest, but also that our goal is to manipulate the society. This problem with poor Journalism has been raised again with the death of The Queen Elisabeth II, being noted by many that the BBC has overcovered this historic moment. Do you agree?

It has been widely argued that during the 10 days of national mourning for The Queen, The BBC and other British media have merely focused on Her Majesty, leaving aside many important news. On top of that, it has been brought to light the view that the voice of republican citizens has been shout down. Consequently, the other day the BBC radio dedicated a programme to debate with journalists whether they agreed or not with these points of view.

In my case, I am off the opinion that, in the event of such a big thing happening, it is quite normal to cancel the major part of the planned shows in order to cover the passing of such an important figure, since we need to take into account that, not only is she The Queen of England, but also the Head of State of many countries and one of the most powerful human beings of the world. What I am trying to imply is that, regardless of your thoughts about the Royal Family, she was sort of the mother of England.

Notwithstanding, I must admit that the BBC failed to cover many other stories that were as well rather crucial, such as the Ukrainian War. However, at the same time we have to say that during the Covid pandemic it seemed that the only thing that mattered was the number of coronavirus cases. Therefore, I would say that there is a need for self-criticism for we really have to learn how to set a balance when it comes to giving the news.

A menudo el papel de los periodistas es criticado, afirmando que no solamente publicamos historias subjetivas por intereses económicos, sino que además, nuestro objetivo es manipular a la sociedad. Este problema con el pobre periodismo ha sido otra vez debatido con la muerte de la Reina Isabel II, siendo destacado por muchos que la BBC se ha pasado tres pueblos con la cobertura de este histórico momento. ¿Qué opinas?

La polémica ha estado servida, ya que muchos han opinado que durante los 10 días de luto por la Reina, la BBC y otros medios británicos se han solamente centrado en Su Majestad, dejando de lado otras noticias importantes. Además, se piensa que la voz de ciudadanos republicanos ha sido silenciada. Como consecuencia, el otro día la BBC dedicó un programa a un debate periodístico para comentar estas quejas.

En mi caso, soy de la opinión de que ante tal evento importante, es muy normal que se cancelen la mayoría de los programas planificados con el fin de cubrir la muerte de una figura tan pública. Y es que hay que tener en cuenta que no solo era la Reina de Inglaterra, sino que además era la Jefa de Estado de muchos países y una de las personas más poderosas del mundo. Con esto lo que quiero decir es que, más allá de tus ideales políticas, ella era como la madre de Inglaterra.

No obstante, debo admitir que la BBC cometió el error de dejar de lado muchas historias que son también cruciales, como la guerra de Ucrania. Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo también hay que reconocer que durante la pandemia de Covid parecía que no importaba nada más que el número de casos de coronavirus. De esta forma, diría que hace falta más auto crítica para aprender a equilibrar la cobertura de noticias.
