The destruction of the BBC/ La destrucción de la BBC

It has been long time since the Journalistic world is in crisis, however, at least, up to now we still could rely on the BBC as the reference of the good Journalism. Nevertheless, the English broadcast corporation has just announced its plan to merge the BBC News Channel with the international service BBC World News so as to commercialise the mediatic giant. News that sounds awful to me as a Journalist for what it might entail.

To begin with, as part of a £500 million pounds cost cutting, there will be loads of redundancies, at least 70. Consequently, staff is preparing a damning report to prove the negative impact that this change will have on the work of every single journalist that will remain in the BBC. Honestly speaking this is terrible news since hordes of good journalists are going to loose their jobs.

On the other hand, another outrageous collateral effect would be the content. Apparently the new channel will show international news to British and foreign audiences, leaving the domestic stories to a shorter section. A measure that seems far from appropriate since 79% of English adults use the BBC to read or listen to local news.

To cap it all, the Ofcom, the Office of Communications, an organisation that regulates the content broadcasted by the BBC, is not longer going to regulate the published news of this corporation, thus the chances of offering unethical information will be much higher. Taking this into account, I must say that I am appalled by the idea of having a more commercial BBC. In my opinion not only are we destroying valued job positions but also we are destroying the little good Journalism that we still have in place. What a shame.

Hace ya bastante tiempo que el mundo periodístico está en crisis. Sin embargo, al menos hasta ahora aún podíamos confiar en la BBC como el referente del buen periodismo. No obstante, el medio británico acaba de anunciar su plan para unir BBC News Channel con el servicio internacional BBC World News. Una noticia, que, como periodista, me parece terrible por lo que puede conllevar.

Para empezar, como parte de un paquete de ahorro de 500 millones de libras, va a haber muchísimos despidos, al menos 70. Consecuentemente, los periodistas están preparando un informe para demostrar el negativo impacto que este cambio va a tener en la labor de los profesionales que se queden en la BBC. Sinceramente, esta noticia es terrible, ya que una gran cantidad de buenos periodistas van a perder sus puestos de trabajo. 

Por otro lado, otro efecto colateral será el contenido. Aparentemente el nuevo canal ofrecerá noticias internacionales a audiencias inglesas y extranjeras, dejando las historias locales para secciones más cortas. Una medida que parece lejos de ser apropiada, pues el  79% de los ingleses adultos usan la BBC para leer y escuchas noticias domésticas.

Para empeorar las cosas, el Ofcom, la Oficina de Comunicaciones, una organización que regula el contenido publicado por la BBC, no va a controlar más las noticias de esta corporación, por tanto las probabilidades de ofrecer información no ética serán mucho mayores. Teniendo esto en cuenta, debo decir que me horroriza la idea de consumir una BBC más comercial. En mi opinión, no solo están cortando las alas a buenos periodistas, sino que además se están cargando el poco buen periodismo que aún existía en nuestros medios. Qué pena.
