Internships, the modern slavery/ Las prácticas, esa esclavitud del mundo moderno

Summer has arrived and with it the internships. Although it is true that some companies take advantage of interns all year on, the high season has just started. Have you noticed that in the pharmacies all of a sudden there are young women in their twenties working as assistants? They are interns, most of them from the University of Navarra.

Frankly speaking I have no idea about under which conditions are these future pharmacists working on, however, surfing on Infojobs and Linkedin I have realised that loads of job offers that, seem quite promising and require so many skills and experience, are unpaid internships, which I find rather abusive. To begin with, the most popular excuse to defend the use of interns is the argument that internships are good as to gain working experience, which is completely true. As a matter of fact, no matter how well you do at the University, you only start learning about your speciality on the job. Not to mention that not until you work do you start learning about the reality of being an adult, which is what makes you grow up.

Notwithstanding, this argument becomes a mere excuse when you make the intern work as a normal employee for less than the minimum wage. To be more specific, it is unacceptable to see how a newspaper is ran by interns every single Sunday. In fact, managers have the tendency to demand from them more than they should, putting a pressure on them that is far from healthy and fair.

All in all, to make things worse there are companies that do not even pay their interns, which to me is like modern slavery. Who is the responsible of this exploitation? Interns are meant to learn, not to make up for the lack of staff, don’t you agree? Have you ever worked as an intern?, how was the experience?

El verano ha llegado y con él las prácticas. Aunque es cierto que algunas empresas incluyen en sus plantillas a becarios durante todo el año, la alta temporada acaba de comenzar. ¿Has notado que de repente en las farmacias hay veinteañeras ayudando? Son chicas en prácticas, casi todas de la Universidad de Navarra.

Sinceramente no tengo ni idea sobre bajo en qué condiciones están trabajando estas futuras farmacéuticas, pero me he dado cuenta de que en webs como Linkedin e Infojobs hay un sinfín de ofertas de trabajo que, aunque parezcan prometedoras y requieran muchas habilidades y experiencia, son prácticas no pagadas, lo cual encuentro bastante abusivo. ¿Qué piensas?, ¿has trabajado alguna vez como becario? Yo sí...

Y es que la mejor excusa para defender el uso de becarios es el argumento de que las prácticas son excelentes para ganar experiencia laboral, lo cual es totalmente cierto. De hecho, da igual lo bien que lo hayas hecho en la universidad, solo aprenderás sobre tu especialidad trabajando.  Por no mencionar que hasta que no trabajas no empiezas a darte cuenta de la realidad del mundo adulto, que es lo que te hace madurar.

Sin embargo, este agumento se convierte en una mera tapadera cuando hacen a los becarios trabajar como si fuese un trabajador de plantilla por menos del sueldo mínimo. Para ser más específicos, es inaceptable ver cómo un periódico sale cada domingo gracias a los becarios. De hecho, los jefes tienen la tendencia de pedir de ellos más de lo que deberían, poniendo una presión que no es para nada justa ni saludable.

Para empeorar las cosas, hay compañías que ni siquiera pagan a sus internos, lo cual, en mi opinión, es esclavitud moderna. ¿Quién es el responsable de esta explotación? Los becarios están para aprender y no para recompensar la escasez de empleados, ¿no crees? ¿Has trabajado alguna vez como becario? ¿Cómo fue la experiencia?
