The presumption of Innocence / La presunción de inocencia

Have you had the opportunity to watch Clickbait? Directed by Tony Ayres, it is one of the mini series that you can find on Netflix. During Easter I have had the chance to enjoy it since I have spent one week sick (Covid still does exist indeed). It is definitely a must see production full of drama and suspense. However, what struck me most is the message that we can all learn from it: never pre-assume the culpability of someone without strong evidence.

From the audio-visual technical point of view, this mini series is very well done, we must admit, above all because the end is far from the one that everyone expects. To be more specific, spoiler alert, it tells the story of the abduction of the brother of the main character, who is filmed with two bruises in his head and two signs saying “I abuse women, a killed a women”. On top of it, the video is uploaded online so as to make it viral, stating that should the video achieve 5 millions views, the presumed abuser will be murdered.

Taking all of this into consideration, obviously an investigation is initiated and at the very beginning even his family is shocked with the apparent double life he was having. Nevertheless, as I said, the reality was a very different one. The point is that had it not been for the main character who wanted to go beyond the mile in the inquiry, everybody would have believed the message given by the video and therefore the image of her brother would have been damaged for ever. 

In conclusion, we have to be sure that we check all the possibilities before accusing someone of being abusive, violent or a murder, even the steal of identity. As a matter of fact, the latter is crucial for in real life, the bad reputation is very difficult to be restored and the stress of being mistreated is irreparable.

¿Has tenido la oportunidad de ver Clickbait? Dirigido por Tony Ayres, es una de las miniseries que se pueden encontrar en Netflix. Duramente esta Semana Santa, tras haber estado una semana enferma (la Covid aún existe), he podido disfrutar de unas cuantas producciones y ésta ha sido una de las mejores. Y es que esta obra maestra llena de drama y suspense nos envía un mensaje del que todos debemos aprender: nunca asumas la culpabilidad de alguien sin pruebas suficientes.

Desde el punto de vista audiovisual, esta miniserie está muy bien hecha, hay que admitir, sobre todo porque el final es lo contrario a lo que todo el mundo espera. Para ser más específicos, spoiler alert, cuenta la historia del secuestro del hermano de la protagonista, quien es grabado con dos moratones en la cabeza y dos señales que dicen “Abuso de mujeres, maté a una mujer”. Encima, el vídeo es subido a Internet con el fin de hacerlo viral, afirmando que si alcanza los 5 millones de visualizaciones, el presunto abusador será asesinado.

Teniendo todo esto en consideración, obviamente una investigación es puesta en marcha y al principio, incluso su familia entra en shock de la aparente doble vida que está viviendo. No obstante, como ya se ha dicho, la realidad es bien distinta. El caso es que si no llega a ser por la cabezonería de la protagonista de querer ir más allá con la indagación, todo el mundo hubiese creído el mensaje dado por el vídeo y por tanto la imagen de su hermano se hubiese visto dañada para siempre.

En conclusión, tenemos que estar seguros de que no descartamos ninguna posibilidad antes de acusar a alguien de ser abusivo, violento o asesino, incluso el robo de identidad. De hecho, esto último es crucial, ya que en la vida real, la mala reputación es muy difícil de reparar y el estrés causado por ser tratado injustamente es irreparable.
