'Don't look up', something to think about/'No mires arriba', una buena autocrítica

Have you already watched Don’t Look Up? It is one of the most viewed Netflix films of the moment. Directed by Adam McKay and released on 2021, the cast of this production is almost ideal with Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep among others. A production that without any doubt is highly recommended, do you want to know why?

To be honest, barely did I know the genre of this movie nor the story line, therefore at the very beginning I was somewhat confused for the combination of stressful and serious scenes portrayed by the two main scientists, Dr Randall and the PHD Dibiasky (DiCaprioand and Lawrence), and the absurd and satirical moments that make you giggle. Notwithstanding, this is precisely the essence of this production, to criticise how many times do politics and the society in general take science for granted and decide not to take experts seriously.

Taking this point into consideration, I am of the opinion that this film is a must watch for it happens to be the exact (slightly exaggerated) reflection of what scientists have had to deal with during these two years of Covid-19 pandemic. To be more specific, from my perspective I find extraordinarily remarkable the way in which both leading roles express their frustration when nobody believes that (spoiler alert) a meteorite is approaching the earth and will destroy the whole planet, which is basically the daily fight that experts in health endure when it comes to advise governments about restrictions so as to avoid the spread of coronavirus, isn’t that right? In addition, we also have to highlight the outstanding job of  Meryl Streep acting as a selfish prime minister.

In conclusion, McKay is sending us a clear message through this movie, which obviously boils down to the constant greed that politicians around the world have and how easy to be deceit are citizens with social media. Something to think about, above all when we still see people claiming that Covid-19 is a lie. Give it a try, it is quite long and not as hilarious as classics such as The Life of Brian, but it is completely worth it.

¿Has visto ya No mires arriba? Es una de las películas de Netflix más vistas del momento. Dirigida por Adam McKay y estrenada en el recién acabado 2021, su elenco de actores es casi ideal con Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence y Meryl Streep entre otros. Una producción que sin lugar a dudas es altamente recomendable, ¿quieres saber por qué?

Para ser sinceros, apenas conocía el género de esta película y menos su argumento, por lo que al comienzo de ésta me sentí algo confusa por la combinación de escenas estresantes y serias protagonizadas por los dos principales científicos Doctor Randall y Dibiasky (DiCaprioand y Lawrence), y los absurdos y satíricos momentos que te hacen sacar alguna risotada. No obstante, esto es precisamente la gracia de No mires arriba, criticar las cientos de veces que los políticos y la sociedad en general hacen caso omiso a los expertos en ciencia.

Tomando esto en consideración, soy de la opinión de que esta película debería estar en tu lista, ya que se trata de un casi exacto (algo exagerado) reflejo de lo que los científicos han tenido que lidiar en estos dos años de pandemia de Covid-19. Para ser más exactos, desde mi punto de vista encuentro extraordinario el papel de los dos protagonistas expresando su frustración cuando nadie les cree en el momento en que categóricamente (spoiler alert) afirman que un meteorito se está aproximando a la Tierra, lo cual conllevará la destrucción del planeta, que es básicamente la pelea diaria a la que se enfrentan los expertos en salud cuando quieren guiar a los gobiernos sobre medidas para prevenir la propagación del coronavirus. Además, también hay que recalcar el papelón que hace Meryl Streep  como presidenta corrupta en busca de poder.

En conclusión, McKay nos está mandando un mensaje claro a través de esta producción,  el cual claramente se resume en la constante avaricia que los políticos de todo el mundo tienen y qué fácil de engañar son los ciudadanos hoy en día gracias a las redes sociales. Algo que pensar, sobre todo cuando aún vemos gente afirmando que el coronavirus es una mentira. Dale una oportunidad. Es algo larga y no tan desternillante como clásicos como La Vida de Brian, pero merece la pena.
