Are tennis player exempt from everything? / ¿Pueden los tenistas librarse de todo?

Have you heard the news about Novak Djokovic? The Serbian tennis player has passed the last days under detention in a immigration centre in Melbourne, Australia, owing to the fact that his VISA was revoked for not being fully vaccinated against Covid-19. The problem is that even though the Australian judge has given its green light so as to re give him permission to play in this country, hence making possible his participation in the Australia Open, the Aussi Government has still the power to deport him. What are your thoughts about this polemic?

To begin with, in order to forge our own opinion, we do need to be aware of the current legislation put in place by the Government of Australia to stop the spread of Omicron. To sum up, everybody needs to have had the booster jab for Covid-19, this means to be at least double vaccinated, unless you are not able to receive them for a medical condition which has to be proven. In light of this view, Djokovic states that having been infected with coronavirus around the 12^th of December allows him to be exempt from the vaccine. Notwithstanding, the immigration authorities, which claim that they do not wish to make a decision out of Djokovic being famous, may or may not accept this situation as a proof of exception.

As a matter of fact, this is exactly the point that I would like to bring to your attention, since it appears that lately the Covid-19 restrictions rules are not applicable for important citizens such as politicians and tennis players. Actually, I am of the opinion that the only way to make residents follow the guidance is for Governments to not make exceptions for big stars or powerful townspeople. Nevertheless we have to admit that when it comes to money, measures tend to fall apart.

On balance, I strongly believe that we all need to respect how each country decides to arrange its guidance, regardless of our social status, although we all know that hypocrisy is in every corner and norms are only implemented out of economical interests. Djokovic should not be treated in an special manner, do you agree?

¿Te has enterado de la polémica en la que Novak Djokovic se ha visto envuelto? El tenista serbio ha pasado los últimos días en un centro de detención para inmigrantes en Melbourne, Australia, debido al hecho de que su VISA fue cancelada por no haber recibido las dos dosis de la vacuna contra la  Covid-19. El problema es que aunque el Tribunal de Justicia de Australia ha dado luz verde para que su pasaporte vuelva a ser válido para jugar en el Open de Australia, el Gobierno australiano tiene aún el poder de deportarle. ¿Qué piensas sobre esto? 

Para comenzar, para poder forjar nuestra propia opinión tenemos que ser conscientes de cuál es la actual legislación australiana para prevenir la propagación de Omicrón. En resumidas cuentas, todo aquel que desee entrar en el país deberá haber recibido al menos dos dosis de las vacunas previamente aprobadas, al menos que por algún motivo médico que tiene que ser probado no puedas recibirlas. Dada esta información, Djokovic ha defendido que el haber contraído coronavirus a mediados de diciembre le permite estar exento de vacunarse. No obstante, el Ministerio de Inmigración, que asegura no querer tomar una decisión en base a la popularidad del jugador, aún tiene el poder de aceptar o no dicha condición como prueba de excepción.

De hecho, éste es exactamente el punto que me gustaría que consideraseis, ya que al parecer, últimamente las restricciones contra la Covid-19 parecen no ser aplicables a ciudadanos importantes como políticos o jugadores de tenis. Y es que en mi opinión la única forma de hacer que todos sigamos las diferentes normas es que los Gobiernos no hagan excepciones a famosos o gente con dinero y poder. No obstante, no nos engañemos, cuando los billetes entran en juego se suele hacer la vista gorda.

En conclusión, considero firmemente que todos deberíamos respetar la  manera en que cada país decide pelear contra esta pandemia, independientemente de nuestro estatus social, aunque es bien sabido que la hipocresía está en cada esquina y estas medidas suelen ser implementadas cuando interesa. Djokovic no tendría que ser tratado de forma especial, ¿no estás de acuerdo?
