Refugees of Calais, what is the real problem? / Refugiados en Calais, ¿cuál es el verdadero problema?

Rarely have politicians ever showed the slightest pitch of kindness towards the arrival of refugees upon their coasts, however, this is the first time I feel appalled by the attitude of France and the UK as for the death, several days ago, of more than twenty people in Calais, where there were drowned. To be more specific, the way in which each country is putting the blame on each other is outrageous, acting as if they were mere pieces of meat.

To begin with, I completely understand the fact that both countries have an arduous position for the high number of people coming to the UK through the English Channel with any sort of legal documentation. Having said this, I can see the point that as a country, to handle the arrival of thousands of refugees at the same time might be utterly overwhelming, nevertheless, under no circumstances can we forget that above refugees, they are people, therefore we must treat them exactly like that, like people. So, what is the solution?

According to Emmanuel Macron and Boris Johnson the problem is the mafia that puts these immigrants in tiny and fragile boats, risking their lives. However, I would say that the real issue is not the mafia but the reasons why these citizens are so desperate to scape from their home countries. Have they thought about that? Yes, they have, without any doubt, nonetheless, they are not willing to try to tackle the real roots of emigration as they do not have any interest in assisting these poor countries. Thus, this is indeed a vicious circle that will never end.

On balance, nobody is eager to deal with the atrocious conditions in which these refugees have to live with, and, to make things worse, those countries, such as the UK, that signed the Geneva treat so as to help locals fleeing from war, are the ones that are right now making them return to their home countries. Basically no one wants them since as they state, ”we have enough local problems to solve”. Well, then, what now? What shall we do with this wave of refugees?

Pocas veces demuestran los políticos sensibilidad alguna por la llegada de refugiados a sus costas, sin embargo, ésta es la primera vez que me hallo aturdida por la actitud que Francia y Reino Unido están mostrando acerca de la muerte, hace unos días, de más de una veintena de personas en las aguas de Calais, donde se ahogaron. Para ser más específicos, la manera en que cada país está culpando al otro es increíble, actuando como si fuesen simples trozos de carne.

Para empezar, entiendo completamente el hecho de que ambos estados se encuentran en una posición complicadísima con el movimiento tan masivo de inmigración ilegal que tiene lugar en el Canal de La Mancha. Dicho esto, comprendo que la llegada de centenares y millares de personas en barcos enanos y peligrosos puede ser saturante, no obstante, bajo ninguna circunstancia debemos olvidar que ante todo los refugiados son personas, por tanto hay que tratarles como tal. Entonces, ¿cuál es la solución?  

Según Emmanuel Marcon y Boris Johnson, el problema son las mafias que ponen a estas personas en enanos y frágiles barquitos, poniendo sus vidas en peligro. Sin embargo, yo diría que más allá de eliminar las mafias hay que analizar por qué estos ciudadanos están tan desesperados por huir de sus países. ¿Han considerado esto? Claro que sí, sin lugar a dudas, lo que sucede es que no les interesa indagar más, con lo cual nos hallamos ante un círculo vicioso sinfín.

En conclusión, nadie tiene ninguna intención de lidiar con las terribles condiciones en las que estos refugiados tienen que vivir. Encima, para empeorar las cosas, aquellos países como el Reino Unido que firmaron el tratado de Ginebra con el fin de ayudar a aquellas personas que tengan que escapar de la guerra, son precisamente los que están devolviendo a estas personas a sus países de origen. Y es que como suelen decir, “bastantes problemas locales tenemos ya que resolver”. Si esto es así, ¿qué hacemos?
