Wi-Fi has just turned 22 years old/El Wi-Fi ha cumplido 22 añitos

I happened to read recently that just few days ago was the 22^nd anniversary of the Wi-Fi. Surprisingly enough, the wireless internet is still a baby to whom we are completely dependable on. Do you remember our daily routine when we did not have access to the net or when we needed to manually connect to it every time we wanted to spend sometime surfing? It was not so much time ago, though.

In my case, I recall that when I was a child I used to use the computer version of Encarta Encyclopaedia so as to do my school assignments, which had to be saved in a floppy disk. Then, a few years later, internet began to be available for almost every family. To be more specific, back then, if you needed internet connexion, we had to connect our computer to a fixed rooter, a procedure that right now seems absolutely hilarious due to the noise that it used to make.

What’s more, years ago both the internet and the house telephone would share the same line, therefore, you couldn’t surf the net and call someone at the same time. A problem that even though in this day and age seems rather insignificant owing to the massive use of the mobile, twenty years ago was a big deal since we were still quite often using the regular fixed phone to call family and friends. In addition, in 2000 it was unthinkable to be able to be online all day long without being worried about the bill, actually, we did have to wait until six o clock in the afternoon so that internet wouldn’t cost a fortune. Consequently, my and my friends frequently met at that exact time in someone’s house in order to enjoy the wonders of internet. It is unbelievable how technology can change so much so fast, don’t you think?

In the present, not only is to connect to the Wi-Fi pretty easy, but also it is already considered as a basic service that even in the hotels is free. As a matter of fact it has become a new right that you are entitled to have since all of a sudden it seems as if we could not do anything without it. Think about this, how do you normally react when your Wi-Fi is down? Do you feel as if it was the end of the world? Should you feel like this, breath in and remember the old times when we could perfectly survive without it.

He leído recientemente que hace poco ha sido el 22 aniversario del Wi-Fi. Sorprendentemente, el uso de internet sin cables es aún un bebé del que somos completamente dependientes. ¿Te acuerdas de tu día rutinario cuando no teníamos acceso a internet y de lo que debíamos hacer cada vez que necesitábamos conectarnos? Había que hacerlo manualmente. Pero aunque parezca que esté hablando de la época de los dinosaurios, lo cierto es que la revolución digital es bastante nueva.  

En mi caso, recuerdo que cuando era pequeña solía utilizar la famosa Encarta para llevar a cabo mis trabajos del cole, los cuales tenían que ser guardados en un disquete. Sin embargo, unos pocos años más tarde internet comenzó a estar disponible para casi todas las familias. Para ser más específicos, por aquel entonces, si necesitabas usar conexión a internet debías conectar tu ordenador a un rooter fijo, un proceso que a día de hoy es desternillante por el ruido que realizaba.

Por si esto fuese poco, años atrás tanto el internet como el teléfono fijo de casa iban en la misma línea, por tanto, no era posible navegar por internet y llamar a alguien a la vez. Un problema que aunque hoy en día parece insignificante debido al uso masivo del móvil, hace veinte años era un lío tremendo, puesto que usábamos el teléfono fijo de forma frecuente para hablar con nuestros familiares y amigos. Por otro lado, en el año 2000 era impensable estar todo el día online sin preocuparse por las altas facturas. De hecho, casi todos teníamos que esperar hasta las seis de la tarde para conectarnos  y así evitar que a nuestros padres les costase una fortuna. Por esa misma razón, yo solía quedar con mis amigas a esa hora exacta para disfrutar de las ventajas del maravilloso internet. Es increíble cómo puede cambiar la tecnología tanto en tan poco tiempo, ¿no crees?

Actualmente conectarse al Wi-Fi es muy fácil, por no mencionar que ya está considerado como un servicio básico que incluso los hoteles ofrecen gratuitamente. Es más, se ha llegado a convertir en un nuevo derecho que todo ciudadano debe tener, ya que parece que, de repente, no podemos hacer nada sin él. Párate y piensa, ¿cómo reaccionas cuando se cae el Wi-Fi?, ¿sientes que el mundo se acaba? Si es así, respira y recuerda los viejos tiempos en los que podíamos sobrevivir perfectamente sin él.
