The consequences of Brexit/ Las consecuencias del Brexit

Some weeks ago, not only were supermarkets in the UK complaining about the lack of staff available to work due to the self isolation programme run by the NHS, but also about the lacking of stock on their shelves. On account of this they asked the Government to let the employees who have been double vaccinated attend to work whether they have been in contact with a positive coronavirus case or not. The petition was accepted, however, they still suffer from food shortage for companies cannot find lorry drivers, why is that? The answer is crystal clear, Brexit.

Despite the fact that it is utterly obvious that this pandemic has been the trigger of many changes, including the high percentage of non-British UK residents that have left the isle as to return back to their mother land after they were made redundant from their jobs, the matter is that even during lockdown lorry drivers have always been needed, so, what has happened?, where all the drivers have gone ?

Should you think about it, most of the lorry drivers are from the eastern countries of Europe, precisely the immigrants that Brexiters wanted out of their country, since, according to them, villages and neighbourhoods were completely full of Polish and Rumanian taking advantage of the system. Consequently, taking this into account and the fact that apparently the economy of these countries is taking off, it is not a surprise that many of them have run away.

In conclusion, after the explosion of pride that Brexiters had when the UK was ahead in terms of vaccination, now they are starting to deal with some of the terrible consequences of their decision: the shortage of locals willing to take over them on some of the most essential jobs. Thus, now that what is done is done, what is the number 10 going to do in order to solve the problem? I look forward to seeing what will be the next crisis coming along with Brexit.

Hace unas semanas los supermercados del Reino Unido no solamente se quejaban de la escasez de personal disponible para trabajar debido a su programa de auto confinamiento, sino también del hecho de que la mercancía no llegaba a sus tiendas. Por ello mismo, pidieron al Gobierno que dejase que los trabajadores con doble dosis de vacuna pudiesen ir a trabajar por mucho que hubiesen estado en contacto con un caso positivo de coronavirus. La petición fue aceptada, sin embargo, siguen sufriendo falta de stock puesto que las compañías no consiguen encontrar camioneros. ¿A qué se debe esto? La respuesta es clara, Brexit.

Pese a que es bastante obvio que esta pandemia ha sido el pistoletazo de muchos cambios, incluido el alto porcentaje de residentes no nacionales que han dejado el islote para volver a su tierra tras haber perdido su trabajo, el asunto es que durante el confinamiento los camioneros han seguido siendo necesitados, entonces, ¿qué ha pasado?, ¿a dónde se han ido todos?

Si nos paramos a pensar, casi todos los camioneros pertenecen a países de Europa del Este, precisamente la parte de la población inmigrante que los Brexiters querían fuera de su país, ya que, según ellos, pueblos y barrios estaban llenos de polacos y rumanos aprovechados. En consecuencia, teniendo esto en consideración y el hecho de que al parecer la economía de estos países está empezando a despegar, no es sorprendente que muchos de ellos hayan huido.

En conclusión, tras la explosión de orgullo que los Brexiters tuvieron cuando el Reino Unido estaba por delante en el proceso de vacunación, ahora está empezando a lidiar con algunas de las terribles consecuencias de su decisión: la escasez de locales dispuestos a substituirles en algunos de los puestos de trabajo más esenciales. Así, ahora que ya no hay vuelta atrás, ¿cómo va a solucionar Boris Johnson este problema? Estoy deseando ver cuál será la siguiente  crisis que el Brexit va a traer consigo.
