Do you know Muruzábal? It is a quite beautiful village that belongs to the region of Puente la Reina, to the Valle Valdizarbe, embraced by the popular mountain Perdón. Honestly speaking, it is a rather small town of just 235 citizens, but it´s lovely. Muruzábal is my village, the village where I used to spend summer afternoons with my family. We used to go there almost every other weekend so as to relax in the house that my grandparents used to have, putting our feet up in the garden after a refreshing bath in the swimming pool, having a yummy chocolate sandwich. Due to these childhood memories, my devotion for Muruzábal is undoubtedly obvious, but still, I assure you that you must visit the village.
I am not going to lie to you, Muruzábal is not full of touristic attractions, and probably two hours will be more than enough to know the village inside out, however, its visit is absolutely worth it for everybody, for the pilgrims that are doing the Camino de Santiago, and for tourists. Muruzábal is one of the villages included in the Camino. More specifically, 2 kilometres away you will find the Church Santa María of Eunate, which not only is a stunning Roman piece of Architecture, but also is famous for having an octagonal structure and, of course, for leading the Camino from the route Somport. More over, should you do the route Jacobea, from Roncesvalles, you will reach the northern side of Muruzábal, and, actually, if you go for a walk around the village, you will spot several yellow signals that will guide you to follow the Camino.
Having said that, providing you are a pilgrim, I would suggest you to rest in the hostel Mendizabal so that the following morning you can enjoy the medieval ambience of the village, full of green and peaceful corners. Furthermore, you cannot miss either the Church Santesteban. It was built in the XIV century and it was reformed during the XVI and XVII centuries. It has a Latin cross structure, with a medieval nave and lateral altar, whilst the crossing and the heading are from The Renaissance. As you can see, to get the essence of Muruzábal will not delay your journey to great extent, thus you will not regret it.
As for tourists, should you be considering paying a visit to this village, think about the fact that you have the opportunity to get to know a full of history and culture town that is extremely close to Pamplona. Indeed, it will take you just 15 minutes to reach this municipality that obtained the condition of villa (an inhabited land with some privileges) in 1665. Here, apart from the above mentioned, you will be lucky enough to taste amazing local and economy gastronomy in the Bar Los Nogales.
Finally, once you are ready to get on with the rest of your day, it would be surprisingly easy for you to fetch the gorgeous villages of Puente la Reina and Obanos, where you should visit the popular Roman Bridge, the Church of Santiago and the Church of The Crucifix, among other historic and cultural features. Besides, Obanos is considered a big town where you can find everything that you might need. Are you already convinced? You will never have such a cultural treasure so near you!

¿Conoces Muruzábal? Es un pueblo muy bonito que pertenece a la Comarca de Puente la Reina, al Valle de Valdizarbe, a los pies del popular monte Perdón. Para ser sinceros, es una localidad muy pequeña de tan solo 235 habitantes, pero es preciosa. Muruzábal es mi pueblo, el pueblo donde solía disfrutar de tardes de verano con mi familia. Solíamos ir casi cada fin de semana para relajarnos en la casa que mis aitatxis tenían, tomando el sol en el jardín tras un refrescante chapuzón en la piscina, merendando un rico bocadillo de chocolate. Y es que está claro que mi devoción por Muru viene de esos bonitos recuerdos de mi infancia. No obstante, te aseguro que es un pueblo que merece la pena visitar, y mucho.
No voy a mentir, Muruzábal no está lleno de atracciones turísticas, y probablemente puedas llegar a conocerlo de arriba a abajo en tan solo dos horas, sin embargo, verdaderamente merece la pena visitarlo, tanto para los peregrinos que están realizando el Camino de Santiago, como para turistas. Muruzábal es uno de los pueblos que se incluyen en el Camino. Para ser más exactos, a 2 kilómetros de Muru encontrarás la Iglesia de Santa María de Eunate, que no solo es una impresionante obra arquitectónica, sino que asimismo es famosa por su planta octogonal, y por supuesto, por hallarse emplazada en el Camino procedente de la ruta Somport. Es más, si haces la ruta Jacobea, desde Roncesvalles, llegarás a la parte norte de Muruzábal. De hecho, si das un paseo por la villa, verás las típicas señales amarillas que guían a los peregrinos.
Para los turistas, si estás considerando visitar mi pueblo, piensa que tienes la oportunidad de conocer una localidad llena de historia y cultura extremadamente cerca de Pamplona. De hecho, en tan solo 15 minutos llegarás a este municipio que consiguió su condición de villa en 1665. Aquí, aparte de lo ya mencionado, tendrás la suerte de poder degustar deliciosa gastronomía local y económica en el Bar Los Nogales.
Finalmente, una vez que estés listo para seguir con el resto de la jornada, te sorprenderá la facilidad con la que puedes llegar a otros pueblos cercanos como Puente la Reina y Obanos, donde entre otras cosas, es de obligada visita el famoso Puente Románico, la Iglesia de Santiago y la Iglesia del Crucifijo. Además, Obanos es considerado un pueblo grande donde encontrarás todo lo que necesites. ¿Ya te has dejado convencer? ¡Nunca tendrás tal tesoro cultural tan cerca!
