Sanfermines finished last weekend. Did you enjoy them, or are you one of those who avoid them? As I have always stated, contrary to popular belief, our fiestas are not just about drinking and partying. In fact, they are full of special and moving moments that make us, the Pamplonicas, very proud of our town. Can you guess which ones?
For starters, the moment when the gaiteros (bagpipers) come out from the city hall after the chupinazo to play. To be honest, this is one of my favourites; however, I cannot place myself in the middle of the crowd since I am very short, and I got injured the only time I tried to participate. Anyway, I normally tend to watch it on YouTube the following day, and I must say that once again, it was breathtaking. To see everybody jumping, dancing, and singing around these gaiteros is such a unique moment. What’s more, TVE, the channel that was broadcasting this scene, was describing the joy that journalists from Pamplona felt when seeing this moment. Indeed, it’s a feeling that we cannot explain.
In addition, another moving moment for most of us is watching the gigantes dancing before lunch. Needless to say, it’s something rather magical that even foreigners love. Having said that, the best day to enjoy these gigantes is the last one, as they do a special farewell and greet children with kisses and sweets.
Moreover, there is yet another moment that I would like to highlight: what we call la salida de peñas, which essentially is when the peñas (the orchestras of the gastronomy clubs of Sanfermines) leave the bullring and start playing music around the city. There is nothing like moving along Estafeta with a bunch of different people dancing to the rhythm of the orchestras, spreading good vibes across the street. Besides, the farewell of the peñas is also quite special and worth seeing. Can you imagine being in the ring, surrounded by people singing the song of your town with you? This is precisely what happens and leaves everyone speechless, even people who are not from Pamplona.
All in all, those who think of Sanfermines as a wild party where everybody is wasted are very much mistaken. Sanfermines is full of special moments that make us so proud of our town, and I am glad that we manage to transmit that emotion to outsiders. Have I convinced you? Give it a try one year; you will be surprised!

Ya hace una semana que nuestros Sanfermines acabaron ¿Los disfrutaste o eres de los que los evitan? Como siempre he dicho, pese a lo que muchos dicen, Sanfermines no es solo beber y salir de fiesta a lo loco. De hecho, nuestras fiestas están llenas de momentos especiales y conmovedores que nos hacen sentir a los pamploneses muy orgullosos de nuestra ciudad. ¿Puedes adivinar cuáles son?
Para empezar, el momento en que los gaiteros salen del ayuntamiento después del chupinazo para tocar. Para ser honestos, éste es uno de mis favoritos; sin embargo, no puedo ponerme en medio de la multitud ya que soy muy bajita y la única vez que intenté participar me hice daño en el brazo. De todos modos, normalmente tiendo a verlo en YouTube al día siguiente y debo decir que, una vez más, fue impresionante. Ver a todos saltando, bailando y cantando alrededor de estos gaiteros es un momento único. Además, TVE, el canal que estaba retransmitiendo esta escena, describía la alegría que sentían los periodistas de Pamplona al ver esto. Y es que es un sentimiento que no podemos explicar.
Por otro lado, otro momento emocionante para la mayoría de nosotros es ver a los gigantes bailar antes de comer mientras tomas un vermouth. No hace falta decir que es algo bastante mágico que incluso los extranjeros aman. Dicho esto, el mejor día para disfrutar de estos gigantes es el último, ya que hacen una despedida especial y saludan a los niños con besos y chucherías.
Además, hay otro momentico que me gustaría destacar: lo que llamamos la salida de peñas, que básicamente es cuando las peñas salen de la plaza de toros y comienzan a tocar música por la ciudad. No hay nada como moverse por Estafeta con un montón de personas diferentes bailando al ritmo de las charangas, transmitiendo buenas vibraciones por la calle. Por otra parte, la despedida de las peñas también es bastante especial y vale la pena verla. ¿Te imaginas estar en la plaza rodeado de personas cantando al unísono la canción de tu ciudad? Esto es precisamente lo que sucede y deja a todos sin palabras, incluso a los que no son de Pamplona.
En definitiva, aquellos que piensan en Sanfermines como una fiesta salvaje llena de gente borracha están muy equivocados. Sanfermines está lleno de momentos especiales que nos hacen sentir muy orgullosos de nuestra ciudad, y me alegra que logremos contagiar esa emoción a los guiris. ¿Te he convencido? ¡Prueba un año, te sorprenderás!
