Do you enjoy travelling? I'm quite certain your answer would be an undoubtedly yes. But why? This is a typical question you might encounter in a Speaking test of Cambridge exams, especially when preparing for the First or Advanced exam. Indeed, when I raise this question to my students, they often argue that travelling, particularly abroad, allows one to learn from new cultures and, consequently, to grow as a person. However, the other day I read an opinion article that criticised the hypocrisy behind this statement. Do you agree with it?
Frankly speaking, we have to acknowledge that, in general, what tourists tend to do is visit the most touristy places without going off the beaten track. Therefore, if we consider this perspective, the author is quite right since by doing so, we don't truly learn about the culture of the visited country. Moreover, if you doubt this, allow me to provide an example from my personal experience.
Fortunately I've had the opportunity to visit Dubai several times for personal reasons. Dubai is known for its luxury, the high salaries expats earn, and the wealth of the local high class. Nevertheless, what many are unaware of is that the majority of the population live in rather poor conditions, with quite modest surroundings. How do I know this? Because I've been to some of these areas. Indeed, after visiting Dubai's most popular attractions and feeling utterly amazed, I also explored the neighbourhoods where the working class resides, which, in my opinion, truly enriches one's understanding of culture and knowledge.
Having said that, perhaps some readers might argue that even visiting the affluent parts of Dubai provides a thorough insight into Arabic culture. Nonetheless, I must point out that this isn't exactly the case due to the Westernisation of the state. In other words, if you visit UAE during Christmas, you might see shopping malls adorned with Christian ornaments.
All in all, I am of the opinion that this author has a valid point in highlighting that nowadays, deep down, people often go on holidays merely to cross off countries on their list and to show off to the world how cosmopolitan they are, without fully embracing the culture of the visited place. At the end of the day, it's much more comfortable and appealing to spend both day and night in a resort rather than in an ordinary neighbourhood. In that case, your followers will likely appreciate your photos even more as well. What's your take on this?

De hecho, cuando planteo esta pregunta a mis estudiantes, lo que suelen afirmar es que al ir de vacaciones, más específicamente al extranjero, se aprende de nuevas culturas y, por lo tanto, se crece como persona. Siendo sinceros, tenemos que admitir que, en general, lo que suelen hacer los turistas es ir a las zonas más turísticas. He tenido la oportunidad de visitar Dubai varias veces por motivos personales. Precisamente Dubai es conocido por su lujo, los altos salarios que ganan los "expats" y la riqueza de la alta clase local. No obstante, lo que muchos ignoran es que la mayoría de la población vive en condiciones bastante pobres, en vecindarios más bien modestos. ¿Cómo lo sé? Porque he estado en algunos de estos lugares. En cambio, debo señalar que esto no es exactamente así debido a la occidentalización de Dubai y Abu Dabi. En otras palabras, si visitas estos emiratos en Navidad, podrías ver centros comerciales adornados con ornamentos cristianos.
En resumen, estoy de acuerdo con el autor en que hoy en día, en el fondo, las personas suelen ir de vacaciones simplemente para tachar países de su lista y presumir ante el mundo de lo cosmopólitas que son, sin abrazar completamente la cultura del lugar visitado. Al fin y al cabo, es mucho más cómodo y atractivo pasar tanto el día como la noche en un resort que en un barrio pobre. Es más, es probable que a tus seguidores también les gusten más tus fotos. ¿Qué opinas al respecto?
