What do you believe should be the purpose of the media, to entertain or to educate our society? Some weeks ago, I raised this specific question to one of my teenage students, and she bluntly chose the first option. In her view, nobody watches TV to learn. Do you agree with her?
Honestly, I don't. To begin with, there are quite a few quiz shows that are intended to convey culture and provoke critical thinking. In Spain, we have the example of Pasapalabra, and in England, shows like QI (Quite Interesting) serve a similar purpose, don't you think? Fortunately, these are not the only programs on TV that teach, there are plenty that aim to educate us while entertaining.
Moreover, setting aside these obvious examples, as a professional communicator, I must emphasize that every film or episode of a TV series is supposed to be created with the intention of influencing citizens in some way. Specifically, during my time at university, we were taught that beyond the genre of the audiovisual production someone might want to create, there is always a message that the director wishes the viewer to grasp. Thus, in light of this perspective, regardless of the type of work you watch, none of them are made solely for entertainment, but also for learning.
Therefore, considering the above, watching movies or TV series is not merely a waste of time, even if you've watched the simplest storyline ever. Why? Because every movie writer has a goal, and that goal often involves making you think, feel, or react. For instance, even if you've seen a seemingly ridiculous film that doesn't make much sense and only seems to make you laugh, it likely hides a message that you could apply to your life. Have you considered that? So, as I mentioned before, we always learn something from watching series and blockbusters.

¿Cuál crees que debería ser el propósito de la televisión, entretener o educar a nuestra sociedad? Hace algunas semanas, planteé esta pregunta a una de mis alumnas adolescentes y ella eligió categóricamente la primera opción. En su opinión, nadie ve la televisión para aprender. ¿Estás de acuerdo con ella?
Si te soy sincera, yo no. Para empezar, hay varios programas que tienen la intención de transmitir cultura y fomentar el pensamiento crítico. En España, tenemos el ejemplo de Pasapalabra, y en Inglaterra, shows como QI (Quite Interesting) cumplen un propósito similar, ¿no crees? Afortunadamente, éstos no son los únicos programas televisivos de este tipo y hay muchos que tienen como objetivo educar mientras nos entretienen y relajan.
Además, dejando de lado estos ejemplos tan obvios, como comunicadora profesional, debo enfatizar que se supone que cada película o episodio de una serie de televisión se crea con la intención de influir en los ciudadanos de alguna manera. Particularmente, en la universidad nos enseñaron que más allá del género de la producción audiovisual que alguien pueda querer producir, siempre hay un mensaje que el director desea que el espectador reciba. Por lo tanto, a la luz de esta idea, independientemente del tipo de producción que veas, ninguna se hace únicamente con fines de entretenimiento, sino que más bien, tienen como objetivo enviar algún tipo de mensaje.
Por lo tanto, considerando lo anterior, ver películas o series de televisión no es una simple pérdida de tiempo, por mucho que hayas has visto la más simple de las tramas. ¿Por qué? Porque cada guionista tiene un objetivo, y ese objetivo a menudo implica hacerte pensar, sentir o reaccionar. Y es que, incluso si has visto una película aparentemente ridícula que no tiene mucho sentido y que solo te hace reír, probablemente oculte un mensaje que podrías aplicar a tu vida. ¿Has considerado esto? Entonces, me reitero, siempre aprendemos algo al ver series y éxitos (y no tan éxitos) de taquilla.
