The paradise of Doha? / ¿El paraíso de Doha?

The world cup has just began in Qatar, but not without polemic owing to the fact that several workers have complaint about the unhuman conditions in which loads of Indians were required to work in order to build the stadium. A situation that, to be honest, is not new, for it is something that is being going on in the UAE (United Arab Emirates) for a while. What is going on?

As it can be read on some articles and reports published on The Guardian, many Indians and Philippines are recruited in their native countries to work for one or several years in Doha or Dubai as a construction worker or shop assistant. Their conditions are far from fair. To be more specific, they work long hours without breaks and they live in labour camps sharing rooms with too many people. To make things worse, during summer, when in the UAE the temperature is extreme, they have to do their shifts coping with the heat, without any shadow, which more often than not leads to deaths. However, apparently they are full aware of these conditions, admitting that they do it because the conditions in their countries are even worse. Unbelievable.

Having said that, I must confess that having visited Dubai in several occasions, should you decide to go off the beaten track you can notice the two Dubais, the two UAEs.  On the one hand you have the beautiful and posh areas that are made for expats and tourists, which create this idea of paradise, a necessary heaven to attract Americans and Europeans to work there. However, on the other, you have the part of the dessert where you can spot the labour camps, where the low class, the poor immigrants commute by van. There, many Indians are kind of trapped sending money to their families back home.

On balance, in the UAE, if you are Indian you will be treated utterly badly and your life would consist of working. Forget about entering in any bar, you will not be allowed to. Your job would be to do your twelve hour shift and that´s it. Quite sad, isn´t it? But this is not new and even so we are still ignoring the situation. Because the only thing that matters is football.

El mundial acaba de empezar en Catar, pero no sin polémica, ya que varios trabajadores se han quejado de las inhumanas condiciones en las cuales cientos de indios tuvieron que trabajar para construir el estadio. Una situación que, si somos sinceros, no es nueva, ya que es algo que ha estado sucediendo en Emiratos Unidos desde hace tiempo. ¿Qué está pasando?

Como bien se puede leer en algunos artículos publicados en The Guardian, muchos indios y filipinos son contratados en sus países de origen para trabajar durante uno o varios años en Doha o Dubai como obreros o tenderos. Sus condiciones son de todo menos justas. Para ser más específicos, trabajan muchísimas horas sin descansos y viven en campos de trabajadores compartiendo habitación con demasiadas personas. Para empeorar las cosas, durante el verano, cuando en EAU las temperaturas son extremas, tienen que hacer frente a sus turnos en pleno sol y sin sombra, lo que en ocasiones lleva a muertes. No obstante, aparentemente ellos son conscientes de esas condiciones y admiten que las aceptan porque son mejores de lo que tienen que vivir en sus países. Qué triste.

Dicho esto, debo confesar que habiendo visitado Dubai en varias ocasiones, si decides ir a los sitios no turísticos verás las dos Dubais, las dos EAU. Por un lado tenemos el bonito y pijo Dubai hecho para turistas, americanos y europeos, que consiste en una ilusión de paraíso, creado para que éstos estén dispuestos a hacer su vida allí. Por otro, están las afueras, el desierto, donde los inmigrantes pobres van a trabajar en camionetas. Ahí, muchos indios están como atrapados mandando dinero a su familia.

En resumidas cuentas, en EAU, si eres indio vas a ser tratado de forma terrible y tu vida va a consistir en trabajar. Olvídate de entrar en bares poque no te van a dejar. Tu labor será trabajar doce horas, punto. Pero esto no es nuevo y aún y todo seguimos ignorando esta situación. Porque lo único que importa es el fútbol.
