The dilemmas of Journalism/ Los dilemas del periodismo

This is a question for journalists. Have you ever been in a position in which you had to decide whether publishing a specific information or headline was appropriate or not? Certainly you have, however I am sure that the bigger is the newspaper or the TV channel or radio, the bigger dilemmas you come across with. For instance, should we take into consideration the ethical reference of the good journalism, the BBC, we can spot several cases.

Particularly, off the top of my head, there is a famous one that has been shown on the TV show The Crown. What happened? In 1995 the princess of Wales, Lady Di, Diana, gave an interview on the Guy Fawkes night, the fifth of November, to the BBC revealing how unfair was treated by the Royal Family. The fact is that such terrible and tarnishing revelations were disclosed that the BBC viewed itself in an arduous situation.

To be more specific, the British broadcast was torn between doing good journalism and airing the interview and protecting the Crown for according to loads of English citizens, the Crown represents the UK, therefore, should be a crisis in the Royal Family, that would impact badly on Great Britain. In this case, the BBC opted for airing the interview, since it was meant to be neutral, thus, should the Crown make mistakes, these are not supposed to be hidden.

In light of this view, as a journalist that has worked for a small local newspaper, I must say that once I decided to publish a quite ethic headline that was criticised by my manager. On top of that, I know of work colleagues that have had the pressure of giving an article a peculiar angle that was far from fair. Nevertheless, please be aware that there are still moral journalists that do an excellent job, so please do not hate us. Journalism is you friend, the one who provides you with the information that you need, not your enemy.

Ésta es una pregunta para periodistas. ¿Alguna vez has tenido que decidir si publicar una información o un titular era apropiado o no? Seguramente que sí. Sin embargo, cuanto más grande es el periódico o el medio de comunicación, más grandes son los dilemas con los que te topas. Por ejemplo, si tenemos en cuenta al referente del periodismo, la BBC, podemos estudiar varios casos.

Particularmente, hay uno muy famoso que sale en la serie The Crown. ¿Qué sucedió? En 1995 la princesa de Gales, Lady Di, Diana, concedió una entrevista en la noche de Guy Fawkes, el 5 de noviembre, a la BBC revelando lo mal que fue tratada por la Familia Real. El hecho es que con tal turbias declaraciones la BBC se vió envuelta en una situación muy complicada

Para ser más específicos, la cadena británica se halló entre la espada en la pared, entre hacer buen periodismo publicando la entrevista, o proteger a la Corona, ya que según los ingleses, la Corona representa al Reino Unido, así que si hay crisis en la familia real, eso repercutiría en Gran Bretaña de forma muy notable. En este caso la BBC optó por publicar la entrevista, puesto que debía ser neutral y no esconder los posibles errores que se cometan en la Corona.

Dicho esto, como periodista que ha trabajado para un periódico local y pequeño, debo decir que una vez decidí publicar un titular bastante ético que fue criticado por mi jefe. Además, sé de compañeros que han sido presionados para dar cierto ángulo a algunos artículos. Eso sí, por favor tened en cuenta que siguen existiendo buenos y éticos periodistas que hacen un excelente trabajo, así que no nos odiéis. El periodismo es tu amigo, el que te ofrece la información que necesitas, no tu enemigo.
