It is well known that Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the UK, has the tendency to make extreme decisions when it comes to Covid-19 restrictions, ignoring every single guidance that scientists may provide. More specifically, Britain has been one of the first countries to uplift all anti coronavirus measures on the basis of the success of its vaccination program and the lack of severity of the Omicron variant. In fact, the Government is urging its population to learn to live with Covid to such extent that not only can everyone take a flight to or back to England without taking any test, but also since the first of April, should you wish to take one, you will have to pay for it. Is this fair for vulnerable citizens?
On the one hand I completely understand the fact that Downing Street has had enough assisting residents financially since they have spent the last two years paying for the wages and the tests of the whole country, thus there is a point in which that flow of money has to stop. However, from my point view, I firmly believe that there is indeed some ground in the middle. For instance, why you do not offer free tests for the symptomatic locals and set up a cap, a maximum price, on the sale of lateral tests for the asymptomatic ones that desire to be safe and protect themselves and their loved ones?On the other, I share the view that we need to return to normality little by little, nevertheless, under no circumstances must we forget that the pandemic is not over, let alone the fact that there are a lot of vulnerable people around us. In addition, this last point leads me to highlight that by putting an end to free testing we are preventing this part of society from getting back to their normal day for their need to be cautious.
To conclude, so as to facilitate everyone to come out of the pandemic step by step, would not it be better to stop being so extreme in our decision making? It is absolutely selfish to make vulnerable people be under constant lockdown whilst the rest of the island is enjoying normality and freedom. Life is not black or white, don’t you think?-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
