When dreams come true / Cuando los sueños se hacen realidad

Many times we tend to underestimate ourselves and believe that some things are impossible for us to reach, which, in reality are more than possible. That happened to me one year ago, when I managed to pass one of the most difficult exams you can ever take, the CPE (Certificate in Proficiency English) of the University of Cambridge, the maximum level of English that can be certified. Little did I know ten years ago that I was going to be able to accomplish that goal. Actually, at that time, passing that exam was a dream, a dream that eventually came true. How? With a lot of hard work.

Even though I did not obtained good grades in English at High School, I have always enjoyed studying English and using it as a language. As a matter of fact, I have been told that when I was a child I used to play that I was an English Teacher, and, that, when I was a thirteen year old pre teenager, I would say that I was going to be one in the future. Notwithstanding, not until I spent three months studying in Cambridge eleven years ago, did English become a hobby to me. What an amazing experience. There I started to improve my English skills and to have a decent level, which I have been brushing up since then.

What is more, when I came back to Spain I continued learning English, and, with a lot of effort, two years later I managed to obtain the Advanced certificate. However, that was not enough for me and I decided to return to the UK to improve my skills even more, which I definitely did after 5 years living immersed with locals and foreigners, working at first in Customer Service and in an office afterwards. Consequently, when the Covid pandemic commenced and was put in furlough by my company, I opted for taking advantage of my free paid time and  I prepared myself for the Proficiency Exam. It was really challenging and it required a lot of self-study, however, with that qualification I would have more possibilities work wise, and I finally proved to my self that I could do what it seemed impossible.

On balance, do not let anyone ruin your dreams. With hard work, consistency and effort you can do (almost) whatever you want, and if at the end you are not able to achieve your objectives, it is just worth it trying it, and who knows, maybe one day you make your wishes come true. Yes, we can!

Muchas veces tendemos a subestimarnos y a pensar que algunas cosas son imposibles de lograr, lo cual en realidad es más que posible. Esto me sucedió a mí hace un año cuando conseguí aprobar uno de los exámenes más difíciles a los que te puedes llegar a presentar, el CPE, el certificado de inglés proficiente de la Universidad de Cambridge, el máximo nivel de inglés que se puede certificar. ¿Quién me iba a decir a mí hace diez años que iba a conseguirlo? De hecho, en esos momentos aprobarlo era como un sueño lejano, y ese sueño al final se hizo realidad. ¿Cómo? Con mucho trabajo.

Aunque en el colegio no sacaba muy buenas notas en Inglés, siempre he disfrutado estudiándolo y usándolo como idioma. De hecho, me suelen decir que cuando era pequeña solía jugar a ser profesora de ingles, y que a mis trece años solía decir que de mayor iba a dedicarme a ello. No obstante, no comencé a vivir el inglés como un hobby hasta que pasé tres meses estudiando en Cambridge allá por el 2011. Qué experiencia tan genial. Allí fue cuando empecé a mejorar mi nivel, el cual he seguido trabajando desde entonces

Y es más, cuando volví a España continué aprendiendo inglés y, con mucho esfuerzo, dos años más tarde conseguí el certificado de Inglés avanzado. Sin embargo, esto no era suficiente para mí y decidí volver al Reino Unido para mejorarlo aún más, lo cual definitivamente logré tras cinco años viviendo sumergida entre locales y extranjeros, trabajando primero en Atención al Cliente y más tarde en una oficina. En consecuencia, cuando la pandemia de Covid dio su comienzo y mi empresa me puso en ERTE, opté por aprovechar mi tiempo libre pagado y me preparé para el examen Proficiency. Fue muy duro y exigente, con mucho estudio, pero sabía que esa cualificación me iba a ayudar en mi futuro laboral. Al final, me demostré a mí misma que era capaz de lo imposible.  

En resumidas cuentas, no dejes que nadie te arrebate tus sueños. Con trabajo duro, consistencia y esfuerzo, puedes hacer todo (o casi todo) lo que te propongas. Y si no consigues tus objetivos a la primera, el haberlo intentado ya merece la pena. Ademas, quién sabe, quizás a la segunda lo logres. ¡Podemos!
