Being civic out of common sense or to avoid fines/Ser cívicos por sentido común o para evitar multas

The easing of some important anti-covid19 measures here in Spain and the resignation of an English politician on account of breaching the pandemic guidelines have made think, make me wonder whether citizens follow the rules for the sake of stopping the spread of coronavirus or just to avoid fines. Are we aware of why we have to wear masks and keep distance between each other or are we actually like children behaving well out of fear of being punished?

In Spain, from the 26^th of June, the use of masks outdoors is no longer compulsory whenever social distancing is possible. I completely understand that in some situations the mask is not necessary, for instance, if you are in a desolated mountain hiking or in a quiet and broad street. However, there are certain circumstances in which even though you are not indoors, the mask, in my opinion, is essential, since sometimes, in narrow and busy areas you are not capable of keeping safe distance from other people. On top of that, let´s face it, even when social distance is more than feasible, there are many people who tend to get quite close to each other. 

We can see examples of this type of tendency in the UK, where wearing mask outdoors has never been forbidden. Surprisingly, in Spain, at least up to now, many citizens are still using the mask as usual, but what about those who have spent the last months putting the mask on only when the police was around? When are we going to comprehend that this is not about avoiding fines but about saving lives?

Speaking of the UK, last Sunday, the now former British Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock, has stepped down from his politician role since it has been revealed by The Sun that he breached social distancing anti-covid19 rules back in May, by kissing a colleague. In light of this wrong-doing, it was quite obvious that the right thing for him to do was to quit. Notwithstanding, I fail to understand the reaction of the population. To be more specific, most of the arguments used by English residents in their full of anger criticism were that if Hancock does not follow the anti-covid rules, why should they? 

Well, I strongly believe that this is not the point. Surely, it is absolutely unacceptable for the responsible of the English´s state of health to jeopardise the fight against covid, but, regardless of his mistakes, you have to follow the measures in order to stop the spread of this pandemic, that´s it. Is it too difficult to understand? Taking this into account, it is a paradox that precisely the people who are constantly whining about the pandemic restrictions are the ones proving themselves to be incapable of being civic without them.

On balance, I wish everybody was capable of putting in practise the good common sense that we are meant to have when we become adults, although many times it seems as if just a few manage to reach adulthood, for the general childish behaviour of citizens shown around the world, which is rather noticeable and unbelievable. Let´s hope vaccines are going to eventually work and that nobody else is going to deal with the problems that Israel is. The human being has proved its intelligence with some amazing breakthroughs, let´s do the same in the fight against covid.

El levantamiendo en España de algunas de las más importantes medidas anti-covid19 y la dimisión de un político británico debido el incumplimiento de normas sanitarias me hacen pensar. Me hacen reflexionar si en verdad los ciudadanos cumplen las restricciones de emergencia con el fin de frenar la pandemia de coronavirus, o más bien para evitar multas. ¿Somos conscientes de por qué debemos llevar mascarillas y mantener distancia entre unos y otros, o actuamos en realidad como niños que se portan bien por miedo a ser castigados?

En España, desde el pasado 26 de Junio, el uso de mascarillas en el exterior ya no es obligatorio siempre y cuando sea posible mantener distancia social. Entiendo perfectamente que en determinadas situaciones la mascarilla no sea necesaria, por ejemplo, en el caso de que te halles en una solitaria ruta por la montaña o en anchas y vacías calles. Sin embargo, hay circunstancias en las cuales, incluso aunque estés en el exterior, la mascararilla es, en mi opinión, esencial, ya que, a veces, en estrechas y transitadas areas, es imposible guardar distancia social. Además, hay que reconocer que, en ocasiones, incluso cuando guardar distancia es más que posible, hay mucha gente que tiende a no guardarla. 

Podemos ver ejemplos de esta tendencia en el Reino Unido, donde llevar mascarillas en exteriores nunca ha estado prohibido. Sorprendentemente, en España, al menos hasta ahora, muchos ciudadanos siguen usando su mascarilla de forma usual, pero, ¿qué sucede con aquellos que han pasado los últimos meses tapándose la boca y la nariz únicamente cuando venía la policía? ¿Cuándo vamos a comprender que no se trata de evitar ser multado sino de salvar vidas?

En cuanto al islote inglés, el ya antiguo Secretario Británico de Salud y Bienestar, Matt Hancock, ha presentado su dimisión tras haber sido rebelado por The Sun que en Mayo rompió las normas de distancia personal anti-covid besando a una compañera de trabajo. A raíz de esta equivocación, era bastante obvio que lo más políticamente correcto era que dejase su puesto. No obstante, no consigo entender la reacción de los ciudadanos. Para ser específicos, la gran mayoría de los argumentos que los enfadados residentes ingleses han usado en su contra han sido que si Hancock no sigue las normas anti-covid, ¿por qué deberían hacerlo ellos? 

Desde mi punto de vista este argumento peca de ser notablemente infantil. Por supuesto que es completamente inaceptable que el responsable de salud de un país ponga en peligro la lucha contra esta pandemia, pero, más allá de sus errores, el pueblo debe cumplir con las restricciones para evitar una mayor propagación del virus, y ya está, punto. ¿Es tan difícil de entender? Teniendo esto en cuenta, es bastante paradójico que precisamente todos aquellos que se pegan todo el día quejándose de las normas sanitarias impuestas sean aquellos que demuestran ser incapaces de ser cívicos sin ellas.  

En conclusión, ojala todo el mundo fuese capaz de poner en práctica el buen sentido común que supuestamente deberíamos tener cuando nos hacemos adultos. En cambio, da la sensación de que solo unos pocos llegan a dicha madurez debido al tal increíble comportamiento ridículo que un sinfín de ciudadanos muestran en todo el mundo. Esperemos que finalmente las vacunas funcionen y que nadie más tenga que enfrentarse a los problemas que está teniendo Israel. El ser humano ha demostrado tener la inteligencia extraordinaria para llevar a cabo impresionantes descubrimientos y avances. Usemos la misma inteligencia para luchar contra la covid.
