As you all know, the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh, the husband of The Queen of England, took place this last Saturday. It was rather strange to see the farewell of such an important figure in a desolated church, with the senior royals wearing masks in isolation due to the current Covid-19 pandemic. To be honest, I was a little bit shocked with the announce of the death of Philip since recently I have been learning so much from him thanks to the serial The Crown. Thus, I decided to evaluate the Media coverage of this news.
I opted for the BBC, due to it is the reference of good Journalism and, in general, they do a brilliant job. Nevertheless, I am off the opinion that there were times in which some journalists were somewhat inaccurate when analysing his life alongside The Queen Elisabeth II. I understand that whenever someone passes away, the tendency is to entirely praise that person, and undoubtedly his role as husband and Head of State was remarkable overall, however, it is not true that he has been a completely devoted partner. Actually, they remained married for 74 years on account of The Crown. Because The Crown must always win, and a queen getting divorced was unacceptable. As a matter of fact, at least at the beginning, their marriage was far from perfect, with long and uninformed absences from the Duke, who was considered as a man of affairs, that made The Queen suffered to such great extent that they almost got divorced. Luckily enough, the Duke apparently came to his senses and changed his attitude.
On another note, it has been registered a record of complaints against the BBC due to the coverage of the decease of the royal highness. The audience expressed its dissatisfaction with the fact that the giant brand interrupted all the scheduled programmes of every single one of their many channels to focus on him all day long. In light of this decision, many viewers and listeners criticised that, for instance, covid crucial updated news was suspended.
Nonetheless, the outcry towards the Media was tougher when Lady Di, the princess of Wales, died in 1997. To be more specific, photojournalists were the first ones to be blamed for her car being chased by the Press right before her accident, although later on the stone was thrown at the driver. Frankly speaking, nobody knows yet what happened in that fatal car crash in Paris, but surely that accident gave rise to concerns about the role of the Media, above all when some of the photographers did recognise that nothing would stop them from taking pictures of Diana, not even the possible distress caused to her or her children, since they earnt quite a lot of money with each of the photos. All told, even if Diana deep down loved to be in the front page every day, it is comprehensible why his youngest son, the prince Harry, decided to give up his role as royal.
Notwithstanding, is it the Media, The Crown, or a mixture of both that triggers anxiety on the British Family? After all The Crown does not allow to do anything that might compromise its reputation, not even getting married with the person that you love, and that is something that made The Queen struggle as big sister, and brought the Princess Margaret, Charles, and probably Harry in other matters, to a breakdown. The only difference is that Harry had the courage to step back, although he still should learn how to be truly financially independent without making profitable dramas.
On balance, as for the Media, I would invite all active journalists to consider how lucky they are to be able to make a living out of Journalism, something that many wish and cannot accomplish. Therefore, please, remember what is the real essence of Journalism and start doing what a good journalist is meant to do.

Como todos sabéis, el funeral del Duque de Edimburgo, el marido de la Reina de Inglaterra, tuvo lugar este pasado sábado. Fue muy extraño ver la despedida de tal importante figura pública en una iglesia desolada, con la realeza senior totalmente separada y con mascarillas, debido a la actual pandemia de la Covid-19. Sinceramente, recibí la noticia de la muerte de Felipe con cierto shock, ya que recientemente había estado aprendiendo mucho de él gracias a la serie The Crown. Debido a esto me decanté por evaluar la cobertura mediática de esta noticia.
Opté por escuchar los reportajes de la BBC, ya que es el referente del Periodismo y, en general, hace un trabajo excepcional. No obstante, en mi opinión, hubo momentos en los que algunos periodistas fueron algo inexactos cuando analizaban su vida junto a la Reina Isabel II. Entiendo que cuando una persona fallece, lo normal es centrarse en sus virtudes, y sin lugar a dudas su papel como marido y Jefe de Estado fue, a resumidas cuentas, brillante, sin embargo, no es cierto que fue un esposo enteramente devoto a su mujer. Es más, llegaron a estar casados durante 74 años debido a las reglas de La Corona. Porque La Corona debe ganar siempre, y una reina divorciada hubiese sido inaceptable. De hecho, al menos al principio, su matrimonio fue lejos de ser perfecto, con largas y misteriosas ausencias del Duque, el cual era conocido por ser un tanto mujeriego, que hicieron a la Reina sufrir tanto que estuvieron apunto de poner fin a su relación. Por suerte, aparentemente el Duque entro en razón y cambió su actitud.
Por otro lado, ese día se registró un record de quejas jamás conocido en contra de la BBC con motivo de la cobertura del fallecimiento de su realeza. La audiencia expresó su malestar por el hecho de que el gigante mediático interrumpió, durante todo el día y noche, la programación de todos sus no pocos canales para hablar de Felipe. Ante esta decisión, muchos espectadores y oyentes criticaron que, por ejemplo, noticias relacionadas con la Covid fuesen suspendidas.
Pero esa ola de descontento no tiene nada que ver con la reacción que la población británica tuvo contra los medios cuando Lady Di murió en 1997. Para ser más específicos, los primeros en ser culpados fueron los fotoperiodistas, ya que Diana estaba siendo perseguida por paparazis justo antes de que el accidente ocurriese, aunque más tarde la piedra fue lanzada al conductor. Francamente, todavía se desconoce qué sucedió aquel día de agosto en el que la princesa de Gales murió en aquel fatal accidente de coche en París, pero este acontecimiento puso en relieve el papel de los medios. Y es que algunos fotógrafos reconocieron que nada les impediría tomar fotos de Diana, ni siquiera la posibilidad de causar estrés a la princesa o a sus hijos, ya que ganaban grandes cantidades de dinero por cada una de ellas. Con todo esto, incluso aunque a Diana en el fondo le gustase salir cada día en portada, es comprensible que su hijo pequeño, el príncipe Harry, haya renunciado a su título real.
Pero, ¿son los medios, La Corona o una mezcla de ambos lo que genera tanta ansiedad entre la realeza británica? Después de todo La Corona no permite llevar a cabo nada que pueda comprometer su reputación, ni siquiera casarse con la persona deseada, y eso es algo que ha provocado más de un dolor de cabeza a La Reina como hermana mayor, y que ha llevado a tocar fondo a la princesa Margarita, Carlos, y probablemente a Harry en otros asuntos personales. La única diferencia es que Harry tuvo el valor de desprenderse de sus privilegios, aunque él aún debería aprender a vivir de verdad de forma independiente, sin crear dramas millonarios.
Para finalizar, en cuanto a los medios, me gustaría invitar a los periodistas en activo a considerar la suerte que tienen de poder dedicarse profesionalmente al Periodismo, algo que muchos desearían y no pueden. Por tanto, por favor, recordad la verdadera esencia del Periodismo y empezad a hacer lo que un buen periodista debería.
