When tennis is above everything/Cuando el tenis está por encima de todo

Since the very beginning of this Covid-19 Pandemic, many countries have failed to be coherent when it comes to put in place the correct measures so as to stop the spread of the Coronavirus. Last week, France, more specifically, Paris and some of its citizens, proved great lack of common sense, organisation and control. What happened?

Certainly you all know that the famous Roland Garros tennis championship has taken place quite recently. On Wednesday, Novak Djokovic played against Matteo Berrettini. The match began at nine in the evening and, as often occurs in tennis, the game was so competitive and intense that it lasted more than two hours. The problem was that, even though France is under the process of easing little by little its lockdown, French are still obliged to go home at 23.00 hours. Nevertheless, in spite of this state of emergency rule, the spectators refused to leave the stadium, thus, the organisers had no option but to interrupt the set until all of them were gone. Unbelievable.

I understand that the tickets must have been incredibly expensive and such an equal and master game is undeniable engrossing. Notwithstanding, I consider that collaborate in the fight against a pandemic is by far much more crucial. Actually, it should be the priority. It should be, however, regrettably, for some people, sports are above everything. 

As for the authorities, is it not clearly foreseeable that a tennis match commencing at 21.00 hours is highly likely to finish around midnight? Why the Government of France did allow Amazon to reach an agreement thanks to which this year one game per day could be scheduled in the evening? Furthermore, where is the French police when citizens are refusing to follow the rules? Of course, when it comes to making revenue, everything is permitted.

To cap it all, on Sunday night, the public was allowed to remain in the stadium until the final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, which started as well at 21.00, was over. The ridicule excuse was that forcing fans to leave the premises might have ended up in public disorder. This announcement was welcomed by these tennis lovers, who childishly sang The Marseillaise. What a good example. Once again, sports win the battle. Could you imagine what would happen should every single anti-covid measure was lifted on account of sports tournaments?

Desde el inicio de esta pandemia muchos países han destacado por su falta de coherencia a la hora de poner en marcha medidas para frenar la Covid-19. La semana pasada, Francia, más concretamente París y algunos de sus ciudadanos, demostró una grave falta de sentido común, organización y control. ¿Qué sucedió?

Seguramente todos sabréis que reciéntemente ha tenido lugar el famoso campeonato de Roland Garros. Y es que el pasado miércoles el enfrentamiento entre Novak Djokovic y Matteo Berrettini dio mucho de qué hablar. El partido comenzó a las nueve de la noche y, como ocurre frecuentemente en tenis, fue tan igualado que duró más de dos horas. El problema fue que, pese a que Francia se halla en un proceso de progresiva desescalada de su confinamiento, los franceses deben volver a casa a las 23.00 horas (antes era a las 21.00). No obstante, aunque esta norma esté impuesta por un estado de alarma sanitario, los espectadores se negaron a abandonar el estadio, con lo cual, los organizadores tuvieron que interrumpir el juego hasta que obedeciesen. Increíble.

Me imagino que las entradas habrán sido extremadamente caras y que un partido tan igualado y competitivo atrapa. Sin embargo, considero que, aún y todo, colaborar en la lucha contra esta pandemia es notablemente más importante. De hecho, ésta debería ser la prioridad. Debería, pero lamentablemente, para muchas personas, los deportes están por encima de todo.

En cuanto a las autoridades, ¿no es bastante predecible que un partido de tenis programado para las 21.00 horas tenga altas probabilidades de finalizar sobre media noche? ¿Por qué el Gobierno francés no impidió a Amazon llegar a un acuerdo gracias al cual se permitía que un partido por jornada tuviese lugar tan tarde? Es más, ¿dónde está la policía francesa para intervenir cuando ciudadanos incumplen restricciones? Por supuesto, cuando se trata de dinero, todo está permitido.

Para rematar, el domingo por la noche se le permitió al público quedarse a ver toda la final entre Rafael Nadal y Novak Djokovic, la cual también dio su inicio a las 21.00. La absurda excusa utilizada fue que forzar a los fans a abandonar las premisas podía causar gran desorden público. Este comunicado fue bienvenido de una forma un tanto infantil por los presentes amantes del tenis, quienes cantaron La Marsellesa. Qué buen ejemplo. Una vez más, los deportes ganan la batalla. ¿Os imagináis qué sucedería si cada medida anti-covid fuese ignorada por campeonatos deportivos? Muchas ya lo son...
