"Adolescence" and the misuse of social media/ "Adolescencia" y el mal uso de social media

Have you heard about the breathtaking TV series Adolescence? I’m quite sure you have, since the whole world seems to be talking about it. Nevertheless, contrary to what many people and experts have done, I have no intention of analysing every single detail of the miniseries. What I’m going to focus on is the issue it raises: the misuse of social media by teenagers and how difficult it can be for parents to control it.

To begin with, there is a major issue that I believe goes beyond parental control: the easy access to social media. As far as I’m aware, although you're supposed to be over sixteen to set up an account on Instagram or TikTok, it’s rather simple to create one using a fake date of birth. So, in this case, what would be the solution? In my opinion, should Mark Zuckerberg and his colleagues be more interested in controlling the age of their users, the consequences would be entirely different.

In addition to this, there's another challenge. On Adolescence, the father mentions that it’s absolutely impossible for parents to constantly keep an eye on their children when they’re online until early hours. This is a real trend, as several teenagers have told me they stay up until 2 a.m. on TikTok or playing video games, even on school nights. On top of that, a mother recently told me that her teenagers are highly addicted to their laptops and admitted that she’s unable to keep her daughter away from that distraction, especially since the computer is also used for school-related tasks such as homework. But is that really true? Is it that difficult to manage their internet use?

All things considered, teenagers are not only badly exposed to bullying and other online dangers, but they’re also not getting enough sleep to function properly the following day. Honestly, I’m not the right person to put forward potential solutions to this matter. Notwithstanding, it seems that parents could take a closer look at what their kids are doing online. Parents, what are your thoughts?

¿Has oído hablar de la impresionante serie de televisión Adolescence? Estoy bastante segura de que sí, ya que todo el mundo está hablando de ella. Sin embargo, a diferencia de lo que han hecho muchas personas y expertos, no tengo ninguna intención de analizar cada detalle de la miniserie. En lo que voy a centrarme es en el problema que plantea: el mal uso de las redes sociales por parte de los adolescentes y lo difícil que puede resultar para los padres controlarlo.

Para empezar, hay un problema importante que creo que va más allá del control parental: el fácil acceso a las redes sociales. Hasta donde yo sé, aunque se supone que hay que tener más de dieciséis años para crear una cuenta en Instagram o TikTok, es bastante sencillo hacerlo usando una fecha de nacimiento falsa. Entonces, en este caso, ¿cuál sería la solución? En mi opinión, si Mark Zuckerberg y sus colegas mostraran un mayor interés en controlar la edad de sus usuarios, las consecuencias serían completamente distintas.

Además de esto, hay otro reto. En Adolescence, el padre menciona que es absolutamente imposible para los padres vigilar constantemente a sus hijos cuando están conectados hasta altas horas de la madrugada. Ésta es una tendencia real, ya que varios adolescentes me han contado que se quedan despiertos hasta las dos de la mañana en TikTok o jugando a videojuegos, incluso entre semana. Por si fuera poco, una madre me dijo recientemente que sus hijos están muy enganchados al ordenador y admitió que no es capaz de mantener a su hija alejada de esa distracción, sobre todo porque el ordenador también se utiliza para tareas escolares. Pero, ¿es eso realmente cierto? ¿Es tan difícil gestionar su uso de Internet?

En definitiva, los adolescentes no solo están muy expuestos al bulling y a otros peligros, sino que tampoco duermen lo suficiente como para rendir bien al día siguiente. Sinceramente, no soy la persona adecuada para proponer soluciones a este problema. No obstante, parece que los padres podrían prestar más atención a lo que hacen sus hijos en Internet. Padres, ¿qué pensáis?

PAU: a proper exam? / PAU: ¿un examen en condiciones?

Have you heard about the PAU? This is what we call the new EVAU, which is the test that students under twenty-five have to take in order to access any of Spain’s public universities. I assume you have heard about it, given that there have been numerous demonstrations regarding the delay in informing schools and teachers about the new exam model. Are you aware of what is going on?

To begin with, we must highlight that students have been taking the Covid model for the past four years, which allowed them a great deal of flexibility, as they were able to choose which exercises they wanted to complete. This model made sense in 2020 when they had to sit their exams without being able to attend classes, but it is no longer justifiable. Anyway, with the new model,  the aim is to encourage students to think more critically, which is great. However, there is something that, at least in the English subject, still does not add up: the speaking and listening components. Why? Because these skills are completely absent.

With this in mind, could someone explain why on earth there is no listening part in the PAU? I could understand the difficulty of assessing speaking skills for such a large number of students, but what about listening? Should their listening skills not be tested, how will they manage in an international meeting or abroad? The ability to understand spoken texts is essential.

Furthermore, the absence of a listening comprehension section has led many schools to remove it from the curriculum. In fact, not a few schools have decided to stop practising listening exercises in class precisely because of the PAU. Incredible. To make matters worse, a significant number of high schools are dedicating the two years of Bachillerato solely to revising reading-based EVAU practice, which is absurd, and teenagers end up utterly fed up with doing endless mock exams.

From my point of view, the PAU should be just a test, not the most important one of a student’s life. Universities should stop demanding such high grades from them. Only in this way could schools focus on teaching English with all the necessary skills included. Please do not stop helping students with listening and speaking; otherwise, they will struggle in the future. Exams should be just that, exams.

¿Has oído hablar de la nueva PAU? Así es como llamamos a la nueva EVAU, que es el examen que los estudiantes menores de veinticinco años deben realizar para acceder a cualquiera de las universidades públicas de España. Supongo que has oído hablar de ella, dado que ha habido numerosas manifestaciones por el retraso en informar a los colegios y profesores sobre el nuevo modelo de examen. ¿Estás al tanto de lo que está ocurriendo?

Para empezar, debemos destacar que los alumnos han estado realizando el modelo Covid durante los últimos cuatro años, lo que les ha dado una gran flexibilidad, ya que podían elegir qué ejercicios querían completar. Este modelo tenía sentido en 2020, cuando tuvieron que presentarse a los exámenes sin poder asistir a clase, pero ya no es justificable. En cualquier caso, con el nuevo modelo el objetivo es fomentar el pensamiento crítico en los estudiantes, lo cual está genial. Sin embargo, hay algo que, al menos en la asignatura de inglés, sigue sin encajar: las partes de expresión oral y comprensión auditiva. ¿Por qué? Porque estas habilidades están completamente ausentes.

Teniendo esto en cuenta, ¿alguien puede explicar por qué no hay una parte de listening en la PAU? Puedo entender la dificultad de evaluar la expresión oral en tantos estudiantes, pero, ¿y la comprensión auditiva? Si no se evalúan sus habilidades de escucha, ¿cómo se desenvolverán en una reunión internacional o en el extranjero? La capacidad de entender textos orales es fundamental.

Además, la ausencia de una sección de listening ha llevado a muchos colegios a eliminarla del currículo. De hecho, no son pocos los centros que han optado por dejar de practicar ejercicios de listening en clase precisamente por culpa de la PAU. Increíble. Para colmo, un número significativo de institutos está dedicando los dos años de Bachillerato exclusivamente a repasar ejercicios de la EVAU, lo cual es absurdo. Los adolescentes acaban completamente hartos de hacer simulacros de examen sin parar.

Desde mi punto de vista, la PAU debería ser solo una mera prueba más, no la más importante de la vida de un estudiante. Y es que las universidades deberían dejar de exigir calificaciones tan altas. Solo así los colegios podrían centrarse en enseñar inglés incluyendo todas las habilidades necesarias. Por favor, no dejemos de ayudar a los alumnos con la comprensión auditiva y la expresión oral, de lo contrario, lo pasarán mal en el futuro. Los exámenes deberían ser solo eso, exámenes.

Stop messing with Iturrama! / Parad de entorpecer Iturrama!

Do you live or work in Iturrama? Aren’t you tired of being constantly disturbed by the ongoing roadworks? Are you satisfied with how the City Council is leaving the roads? In recent months, we have been experiencing some of the most frustrating issues imaginable when it comes to traffic. I am fully aware that the whole of Pamplona has been suffering from this type of inconvenience. However, I strongly believe that one of the worst affected areas is, without a doubt, Iturrama, and sadly, it’s far from over.

To begin with, as you may well know, the City Council decided to carry out works on the main roads in Iturrama simultaneously. Why? To take advantage of European funding. But to do what, exactly? Apparently, to repair the pavements and make the area more eco-friendly and pedestrian-friendly. Nevertheless, from my point of view, the pavements were in perfectly good condition, and the only thing the Mayor of Pamplona seems to want to achieve is to discourage citizens from driving. This makes no sense, considering that Calle Esquiroz serves as a vital link between industrial areas and the town. Quite frankly, people working in these areas need to use their cars.

Not only are these goals impractical, but the process of so-called “fixing the streets” has resulted in massive traffic jams and made it nearly impossible for workers or residents to get to their jobs or homes. It has become a nightmare to drive through Iturrama, let alone park there. To make matters worse, the warning signs about dates and times when parking is prohibited around the neighbourhood are constantly changing and contradictory. So how are we supposed to know when and where we can leave our cars? The City Council is driving us mad, and to be honest, we’ve had enough.

To cap it all, I do not consider these disruptions will be worth it, not even in the foreseeable future. Narrower roads will only lead to chaos and even longer traffic jams, which will undoubtedly cause more anger and frustration among citizens. Is this really what the Government wants: unhappy townspeople?

All things considered, I urge Mr Asiron to stop meddling with a neighbourhood that doesn’t need such so-called improvements and to let citizens get to work and return home in peace. Let’s face it: some people genuinely need to use their cars, especially given that Pamplona is home to many industrial businesses. So please, stop interfering and trapping cars behind fences!

¿Vives o trabajas en Iturrama? ¿No estás cansado de las constantes obras que se están llevando a cabo? ¿Estás satisfecho con cómo el Ayuntamiento está dejando las carreteras? En los últimos meses, hemos estado experimentando algunos de los problemas más frustrantes que uno se pueda imaginar en lo que respecta al tráfico. Soy plenamente consciente de que toda Pamplona está sufriendo este tipo de inconvenientes. Sin embargo, creo firmemente que una de las áreas más afectadas es, sin lugar a dudas, Iturrama. Y, lamentablemente, esto está lejos de terminar.

Para empezar, como bien sabrás, el Ayuntamiento decidió realizar obras en las calles principales de Iturrama de manera simultánea. ¿Por qué? Para aprovechar las subvenciones europeas. Pero, ¿para qué exactamente? Aparentemente, para arreglar las aceras y hacer que la zona sea más ecológica y amigable para los peatones. No obstante, desde mi punto de vista, las aceras estaban en perfecto estado, y lo único que parece querer el alcalde de Pamplona es que la gente deje los coches en casa. Algo que no tiene ningún sentido, ya que la calle Esquíroz es el nexo vital entre las zonas industriales y la ciudad. Hablando claro, las personas que trabajan en los polígonos industriales necesitan utilizar el coche.

No solo son estos objetivos poco prácticos, sino que el proceso de lo que llaman “arreglar las calles” ha resultado en enormes atascos y ha hecho casi imposible que los trabajadores o residentes puedan llegar a sus trabajos o a sus casas. Conducir por Iturrama se ha convertido en una pesadilla, por no hablar de lo difícil que es aparcar. Para colmo, las señales que indican las fechas y horarios en los que está prohibido aparcar en el barrio cambian constantemente y son contradictorias. Entonces, ¿cómo se supone que debemos saber cuándo y dónde podemos dejar el coche? El Ayuntamiento nos está volviendo locos, y sinceramente, estamos hartos.

Para rematar, no creo que estas molestias valgan la pena, ni siquiera en el futuro próximo. Calles más estrechas solo provocarán caos y atascos aún mayores, lo que inevitablemente causará más enfado y frustración entre los ciudadanos. ¿Es esto lo que quiere realmente el Gobierno, ciudadanos cabreados? 

En resumen, insto al señor Asiron a que deje de entrometerse en un barrio que no necesita estas supuestas mejoras y permita a los ciudadanos ir a trabajar y regresar a casa en paz. Seamos realistas: algunas personas realmente necesitan usar el coche, especialmente teniendo en cuenta que Pamplona alberga muchas empresas industriales. Así que, por favor, ¡dejen de interferir y de atrapar los coches con vallas!
